The setup

TrainLoop is a platform that fine-tunes large language models into specialized AI systems using reinforcement learning. The company went through YC's W25 batch and was figuring out how to find their earliest customers.

At that stage, the temptation is to build a big marketing funnel and get as many companies into the pipeline as possible. But TrainLoop was still figuring out what the company would become. A broad funnel meant spending time digging through the mud of marketing a startup that hadn't fully taken shape yet.

What Azeem did

Azeem Azhar is an angel investor in TrainLoop and the founder of Exponential View, a technology research newsletter. He knows a lot of people in tech and is always trying to make introductions to relevant ones.

  • He made targeted customer introductions. Instead of pointing TrainLoop at anyone who might be interested, Azeem identified specific people who matched their ideal customer profile. That shifted the team's approach from building a broad marketing funnel to hunting for the perfect customer at the right stage.
  • He brought market intelligence the founders couldn't get on their own. Exponential View has researchers tracking trends across tech and adjacent sectors. Azeem would surface emerging subsectors and shifts that mattered to TrainLoop's business. In one conversation, he pointed out an expanding segment of the biotech market that Jackson didn't even know existed, but that turned out to affect their product directly.

The result

TrainLoop stopped trying to cast a wide net and started going after specific, high-fit prospects through Azeem's network. The targeted intros made the sales funnel more direct, and the market intelligence gave them a view of their space that went beyond what they could see on their own.

"He's one of the only investors we have who provides really thoughtful ideas that are targeted and relevant to our space. He'll bring up a trend I didn't even know existed, and it turns out to be something directly relevant to our business."

— Jackson Stokes, CEO & Co-Founder, TrainLoop

The takeaway

Most angel investors write a check and offer to help with intros if asked. Azeem matches introductions to the company's actual customer profile instead of connecting people who might be vaguely useful. And because his day job is running a research operation that covers all of tech, he sees shifts before most founders do. That's hard to replicate with a different angel.
